linger and overflow. critical role, cassandra/vex, keyleth. autumn is still yet to come. 250w, rated m. for a prompt at sapphic summer.

Vex lies back in the cloud of pillows covering the window seat in Cassandra's office, drifting in the warm blue of summer twilight sweeping over the Parchwood. The air is heavy with the scent of growing things, rich and ripe for the upcoming harvest.

"Cassandra, darling, shouldn't we be well into autumn by now?"

Pale inside a sunset shroud, white hair illuminated against the shadows under her eyes, Cass hums softly. "No," she says. "Summer stays late in the north. We should enjoy it while we can."

It doesn't sound right to Vex, but Cass looks so happy she lets her kiss the thought away.

The harvest is taken in and the nights stay short. Keyleth visits resplendent in autumn oranges and reds and the air is still humid.

"I know how much you love her," Keyleth says over wine that's pink to match the still-setting sun. "But do you really think this is helping?"

Vex watches her wife under the Sun Tree, its branches limned in gold forming ribbons in her hair. "Cassandra's happy," she says. "Let her live in the light."

She doesn't ask what Keyleth thinks she knows. To name this anything other than summer feels dangerous.

"Thank you," Cass says, her lips pressed against Vex's mouth, in the hollow of her throat, around the burning heat of her centre. "Thank you, thank you."

Blood rises in the puncture wounds in her back, still unmended by summer heat. Vex drags her fingers through it, and time unspools.
