The deer's antlers slide into Marissa's sides easier than the needles when they pierced each other's ears. 

Except. Now Marissa only has the breath to whimper, not scream. Now blood pours from her mouth instead of beading on her earlobes.

"It's almost over," Abigail says, as soothingly as she knows how. She has to stand on tiptoes to kiss Marissa, but she does anyway. Slants her mouth over Marissa's and breathes life back into her until her lungs collapse under the antlers' tips. 

And then Abigail steps back, sweeps the sweat-damp hair from her forehead, and surveys her favourite trophies.
